On Thursday, July 12, 2012, former NFL Quarterback Mike Teel will be hosting a Quarterback Academy at Montclair State University. The one-day event runs from 9am to 3pm and is open to kids in two separate divisions, 4th grade to 8th grade and 9th grade to 12th grade.
Teel made a name for himself as the quarterback of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights between 2005-2008 where he accumulated a school-record 9,398 passing yards and 59 touchdowns in his career. Teel was chosen as the National Player of the Week following a six touchdown, 362 yards passing game against #17 Pittsburgh. His senior season, Teel was honored as Big East Conference Player of the Year by the NJ Sports Writers Association.
In 2009, Teel was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks and earned a spot on the active roster as a backup quarterback. He later had stints with the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears. In his time playing football, Teel has learned from some of the greats including Phil Simms, Tom Brady, and Matt Hasselbeck.
“As a high school, college, and pro quarterback, I benefited tremendously from camps of this nature because of the ability to isolate the position and focus on the finer points of playing quarterback, said Teel. This position is so specialized, that it takes time and effort to learn the right way. That is what this camp will do for any quarterback. It will teach proper technique as well as introduce the mental part of the game that is so vital to being a successful quarterback.”
Teel has received high praise from former teammates including All-Pro running back Ray Rice. “During my time with him at Rutgers, he was the leader of our team, the leader of our offense and he drove us to being great. Mike was the coach on the field, said Rice. Sometimes we didn’t have to look to the sideline for answers because Mike already had the answers. I am proud to say that I was Mike Teel’s teammate in college and in life we will always be brothers.”
Former college teammate and current New England Patriots wide receiver, Tiquan Underwood recalls Teel’s leadership, “’Money’ Mike Teel as I call him is the definition of a general. Always had command of the team & the offensive huddle. A two time captain, which was very deserving because of his leadership qualities.”
Mike Teel’s Quarterback Academy will be hosted at the Football Stadium on the Campus of Montclair State University located at 1 Normal Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07043. The one-day event, which takes place on Thursday, July 12, 2012 and costs $99, runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm (with check in at 8:30am).
